Summer Reading

I always like to recommend some books for summer reading and this summer is no exception.  Instead of a list, I thought I would do longer posts about really special books.

The View from Saturday by E. L. Konigsburg is a wonderful book.  It is on many required reading lists for middle school aged students.  It tells the story of four youngsters who are invited to become an academic bowl team.  Each of the kids has a story that is told in the book.  Each of their stories aids their success on the academic team.  The book has funny moments and touching moments.  I especially liked the description of the wedding that Noah attended.  He unwittingly became the  best man because of some hilarious goings on with the cake.  I also fell in love with the beaches and the turtles** in Nadia’s story.

Ms. Konigsburg is the only author to have won the Newbery Medal and be runner-up in the same year. Her book
Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler won the Newbery Medal and Jennifer, Hecate, Macbeth, William McKinley, and Me, Elizabeth was named Newbery Honor Book. The View from Saturday won the Newbery Medal in 1996, almost 30 years after her first award.
